Hatta sits on the outer eastern edge of the Banda group, roughly 50 minutes to an hour by boat from Banda Neira in calm conditions, and it has the reef that most divers come to the Bandas for. Along the west coast the reef flat runs out at around two metres and then simply stops, dropping almost vertically for several hundred metres of shoreline. That means snorkellers get the good stuff too. You can swim out from the village beach, particularly around the old village on the north side where the reef flat is narrowest, and be hanging over the edge of the drop within a few minutes of leaving the sand.
The famous site is offshore rather than on the island itself. Skaru, also spelled Sekaru and known as Karang Hatta, is a submerged atoll roughly 500 metres across sitting a few kilometres off the south coast. Most diving there happens around 25 metres while the wall carries on well past recreational limits, and these are the Banda sites closest to the 5,900 metre Banda trench. A southerly current concentrates fish on the south eastern corner: unicornfish, fusiliers, jacks, rainbow runners, white tip sharks, Napoleon wrasse, dogtooth tuna, turtles and rays. Operators report visibility in the range of 15 to 30 metres and water between 26 and 29 degrees, and hammerheads are talked about around October and November.
The current is the point of Skaru, not a hazard to be managed away, and at least one Banda operator charges a surcharge for it that reflects how committing the trip is. Snorkellers on the island side should stay near their entry point, because current runs there too.

The calmer windows, roughly March to April and September to December, bring the best visibility and the safest open water crossing, and are the prime diving months. June and July are effectively the closed season, with the resident dive operator's own published calendar shutting for both. Hammerheads are associated with October and November. Rough weather can cancel the crossing outright, so keep a buffer day.

Dive Skaru with a local guide who knows the corner and the current, and treat it as a drift rather than a site you swim around. Snorkellers should stay close to their entry point on the island shore, since the drop off is immediate and current runs along it. Bring your own mask if you have one, plus water and sun cover for an open boat crossing of an hour each way. Carry enough cash for everything, since payment on Hatta is local and informal. Be aware that some dive site names attached to Hatta in travel writing do not appear in any operator's own listings, so book by describing what you want rather than by quoting a site name you read online.
