A 120-metre jet of water dropping off the cliffs at the northern end of Lake Toba.
Sipiso-piso is a single thin column of water that plunges around 120 metres off a cliff at the northern rim of the Lake Toba caldera, above the village of Tongging. The name means knife-like, after the narrow blade of the falls. From the clifftop viewpoint you get the classic shot: the waterfall on one side and the blue expanse of Lake Toba stretching away on the other.
A steep stone stairway switchbacks down to the base, where you feel the spray and the full height of the drop. Going down is easy; the climb back up at altitude is a real workout.
It sits at the opposite end of the lake from Samosir, so most people see it as a stop on the drive between Berastagi or Medan and Tuk Tuk.
Getting there
Sipiso-piso is at the far north of Lake Toba near Tongging, well away from the Tuk Tuk side. From Berastagi it is roughly 1.5 hours by car, and from Medan around 3 to 4 hours, so it is usually combined with the overland journey to or from the lake rather than visited from Samosir. A chartered car or tour is the practical option, as public transport is awkward.
Best time
Morning light is best for photos and the air is clearer before midday cloud. The waterfall runs strongest in and just after the wet season, while dry-season skies give the cleaner lake views; mornings also mean fewer domestic tour buses.
Good to know
Entrance is cheap (around IDR 10,000) plus parking. The descent to the base is long, steep, and tiring to climb back, so wear proper shoes and only attempt it if you are reasonably fit; the clifftop viewpoint alone is rewarding if you skip the stairs.
It is at the opposite, northern end of the lake, several hours away by road, so it is not a quick trip from Tuk Tuk. Most travellers visit it while driving between Medan or Berastagi and the lake.
No. The clifftop viewpoint already gives the famous view of the falls and Lake Toba together. The stairway to the base is optional and steep, with a tough climb back up at altitude.
If you are already travelling overland to or from Lake Toba it is an easy and worthwhile stop for the 120-metre drop and lake panorama. As a dedicated round trip from Samosir, the distance makes it harder to justify.
Add it to a route across Indonesia and we will work out the travel time and cost between every stop.
