A sheltered C-shaped cove between two headlands, usually calm and quiet.
Mawun is a compact, deeply curved cove tucked between two green headlands on the road west of Kuta. The bay shape shelters it from a lot of swell, so the water is often calmer than neighbouring beaches and pleasant for a swim and a float.
It stays quieter than Selong Belanak or Tanjung Aan, with just a handful of warungs and sun loungers along the back of the sand. The two headlands are easy to scramble partway up for a look down over the cove.
Currents can still pick up when bigger swell wraps in, so it pays to check the water before swimming out far rather than assuming it is always flat.
Getting there
Mawun is about a 15 to 20 minute drive west of Kuta, roughly halfway along the road toward Selong Belanak, reached by scooter, car, or Grab. A signed turnoff leads down to a parking area behind the beach. Expect a small local parking and access fee.
Best time
The dry season, May to September, brings the calmest water and clearest skies. Mornings and weekdays are the quietest, since it sees fewer crowds than the bigger-name beaches nearby. Afternoons can get gustier.
Good to know
Bring your own water and snacks if you want choice, as the few warungs here are limited. Loungers and umbrellas usually carry a rental fee, and there is little natural shade on the open sand.
The cove shape keeps it calmer than many south-coast beaches, so it is often good for swimming. Currents can still strengthen with bigger swell, so check the water before going out deep.

Just a small cluster of warungs and rental loungers behind the beach. Bring cash for parking, food, and any umbrella or sunbed you use.
