The forested island that shelters the strait and hosts most of the dive resorts.
Lembeh Island is the long, hilly island that runs parallel to the mainland and forms the strait itself. By sheltering the channel from open ocean swell, it is the reason the muck diving here is so calm and so consistent.
Most dive resorts sit on the island's quiet, forested shore, reached by boat from Bitung. Days revolve around diving, so between dives the island offers a slow rhythm: jetty views, warm water, the odd village visit, and a hike up to the old Japanese World War Two cannons and bunkers for those who want to stretch their legs.
This is a working dive destination rather than a beach holiday. The pull is the water, and the island is the comfortable, low-key base you return to between dives.
Getting there
Reach Lembeh Island by driving about 90 minutes from Manado to Bitung, then crossing the strait by boat, usually a transfer arranged by your resort. Day visitors can also be brought across by dive operators. Public boats serve some villages, but most travelers come on a resort package.
Best time
Lembeh is a year-round destination since the strait is sheltered. The drier months around June to October bring the calmest weather, though diving and resort life continue through most of the year.
Good to know
Treat Lembeh as a diving base rather than a snorkel or beach stop, as the shoreline is mangrove and dark sand, not swimming beaches. Book a resort with its own house reef and jetty, and pack for humid, buggy evenings with repellent and light layers.
No. The shores are mostly mangrove and dark volcanic sand, and the appeal is the diving in the strait. Come for the water, not for sunbathing or swimming beaches.
Not strictly, as some operators run day trips from the Bitung side, but most divers stay at an island resort for easy boat access and multiple dives a day.
A little. You can visit local villages or hike to the old Japanese wartime cannons and bunkers, but the island is a quiet diving base rather than a busy resort scene.
