The dormant volcanic cone that anchors the marine park, with steep walls around its base.
Manado Tua is the tall, near-perfect volcanic cone you see from Manado and from every boat in the park. The name means Old Manado, and the dormant volcano rises straight out of the sea to around 600 meters, giving the whole area its dramatic skyline.
Underwater, the island is ringed by steep walls and slopes that drop fast into deep, clear water. Sites like Muka Kampung and Tanjung Kopi sit here, and they can pull current that brings in bigger pelagic fish for divers who time the tide right.
A tough hike to the summit is possible with a local guide, but most foreign visitors experience Manado Tua from the water or simply as the backdrop to their dive day.
Getting there
Manado Tua is one of the outer islands of the marine park, around an hour by boat from Manado and a little less from Bunaken island. Dive boats include its sites on day trips, and the volcano hike is arranged through local guides on the island itself. The marine park e-ticket applies.
Best time
The dry season (April to November) brings the calmest crossings and best visibility. For the summit hike, start very early to avoid the midday heat on an exposed, steep trail.
Good to know
The dive sites here can carry strong, sometimes up-and-down current, so they suit experienced divers and are best left to your guide's tide timing. If you hike the cone, go with a local guide, carry plenty of water, and expect a steep, sweaty climb rather than a casual walk.
Yes, the volcano can be hiked to the summit with a local guide, but it is a steep, demanding climb on an exposed trail. Most divers admire it from the water instead.
It is considered dormant. There is no current eruption activity, and it functions as the scenic centerpiece of the park rather than a hazard.
Not always. Several sites around Manado Tua can have strong currents, so they favor experienced certified divers and depend heavily on getting the tide right.
