A steep, hot pre-dawn scramble up Banda's active volcano for sunrise over the islands.
Gunung Api rises straight out of the sea beside Banda Neira, and climbing it is the hardest thing most visitors do in the islands. The summit is around 640 metres, with Indonesia's volcanology agency listing it at 641 metres, which sounds modest until you understand that the trail starts at sea level and goes more or less straight up loose volcanic scree with very little shade. Reckon on a little over two hours up and just under two hours down, or around four hours in total with rests. The descent, not the ascent, is where people get hurt.
The last eruption was in May 1988, a violent eight day event that opened a fissure across the island, sent lava into the sea, killed three people (two of them in a boat accident during the evacuation) and forced more than 7,000 residents off Gunung Api, Neira and Lontor. Many never came back. There have been more than twenty recorded eruptions since 1586, and the mountain has now been quiet for far longer than its historical average. A separate 2017 episode is often described online as an eruption. It was not. It was unrest with a precautionary evacuation.
That matters for planning, because Gunung Api has been sitting at alert Level II (Waspada) rather than Normal through late 2025 and into 2026. At that level there may be an exclusion zone around the summit. Check the current bulletin on Indonesia's Magma Indonesia service, and ask locally, before assuming the climb is on. A guide is strongly advised in any case, both for the route and for the descent.

行き方
A boat crossing from Banda Neira to the foot of the mountain takes only a few minutes, and is normally arranged the day before through your guesthouse along with a local guide. Reported crossing times vary depending on which jetty you leave from, so confirm the pick up point rather than the duration. The trail starts near the shore and climbs almost immediately. Most groups leave around 04:00 to be on the rim for sunrise, or start around 07:00 if they are climbing for the view rather than the light, both to avoid the worst heat and to limit time in any volcanic gas near the top. Reported guide fees start from around IDR 100,000 and the boat is a small extra charge, but these figures are undated and should be treated as a rough order of magnitude rather than a quote. The island has been designated a nature tourism park since 1992, and no special permit is described as necessary.
ベストシーズン
Climb in the calmer months, roughly March to April or September to December, when the sea crossings and the flights and ferries into Banda are more reliable. June and July are effectively the closed season here, with at least one resident dive operator shutting for both. Start pre dawn or very early in any month: the slope is exposed and gets punishing once the sun is up. Go on a clear morning, since cloud regularly closes the summit view in.
知っておきたいこと
Carry far more water than feels reasonable. There is none on the mountain and three litres per person is the commonly cited minimum. Take a headtorch for a pre dawn start, sturdy shoes with real grip, and gloves are not a bad idea on the loose rock. Hire a local guide, both for the route and because the descent on scree is where most injuries happen. Go slowly on the way down and resist the temptation to run the loose sections. If you have weak knees or low fitness, this is a climb worth skipping rather than starting and abandoning halfway. Before you commit, check the current alert level, because Gunung Api has been at Level II through 2026.
Hard. It is short in distance but goes from sea level to around 640 metres on loose, slippery volcanic scree with little shade. Allow a little over two hours up and just under two down. The descent is the riskier half.
Around 640 metres, with Indonesia's volcanology agency giving 641 metres. Figures between 600 and 666 metres circulate online, and Indonesian Wikipedia contradicts itself, so treat any precise number with caution.

Check before you go. Gunung Api has been listed at alert Level II (Waspada) rather than Normal through late 2025 and 2026, and an exclusion zone may apply near the summit at that level. Read the current bulletin on the Magma Indonesia service and ask locally.
Not technically required, but strongly recommended and normal practice. A local guide handles the route finding, the boat arrangement and the loose descent, and hiring one keeps the money in the community. Arrange it through your guesthouse the day before.
