Southeast Asia's largest mosque, facing a cathedral, with free tours for visitors.
Istiqlal is the largest mosque in Southeast Asia, a slab of white marble and stainless steel built to hold more than 200,000 people across the prayer hall, the balconies and the surrounding courtyards. Inside, a single dome 45 metres across sits on twelve enormous pillars above a floor left deliberately plain, with no carpet pattern to distract and no figurative decoration. One minaret rises 96.66 metres beside it. The numbers are symbolic: 45 for 1945 and independence, 12 for the birthday of the Prophet.
The best-known fact about the building is also true. The architect who won the design competition, Friedrich Silaban, was a Christian Batak and the son of a Lutheran pastor of the HKBP church, and he entered under a pseudonym. Sukarno chose the design.
The mosque opened to the public in February 1978. A full renovation between May 2019 and July 2020, costing around US$35 million, cleaned the marble and steel, replaced the mihrab and minbar and rewired and relit the whole building, which is why the interior looks far newer than its age.
Its position is deliberate too. Istiqlal faces the neo-Gothic Jakarta Cathedral directly across the road, and a 28-metre underground Tunnel of Friendship linking the two was inaugurated in December 2024. Pope Francis walked the tunnel with the Grand Imam in September 2024, three months before it formally opened, a detail most write-ups get backwards.
Non-Muslim visitors are welcome outside prayer times and are shown round by a volunteer guide.

Istiqlal stands at the northeastern corner of Merdeka Square, an easy ten-minute walk from Monas. The commuter KRL train to Juanda station is the quickest approach from most of central Jakarta and leaves you a few minutes away on foot. TransJakarta buses stop at Juanda and Istiqlal on several corridors. Grab and Gojek drop at the visitor gate rather than the main prayer hall entrance. Jakarta Cathedral is directly opposite, and the underground Tunnel of Friendship means you can move between the two without crossing the traffic.

Mid-morning or early afternoon, outside the five daily prayer times, when the guides are free and the hall is quiet enough to appreciate the scale. Avoid Friday around midday entirely, when congregational prayer fills the building. Ramadan and the two Eid festivals bring enormous crowds and visits are restricted. The mosque is broadly open from before dawn until late evening, but tourist access is managed around worship, so ask at the information desk on arrival rather than assuming you can wander in.

Entry is free and a donation towards upkeep is welcomed rather than demanded. Dress modestly: legs and shoulders covered for everyone, and a headscarf for women. Robes and scarves are lent at the desk at no charge if you have not brought your own, so a forgotten cover-up is not a reason to skip it. Shoes come off before the prayer hall. Non-Muslim visitors are accompanied by a volunteer guide throughout rather than exploring alone, and reports of the arrangement vary between a formal registration at the desk and simply being met by someone, so allow a little time at the entrance. Guides are generally happy to answer real questions about Islam in Indonesia, and it is the most interesting part of the visit. Pair it with the cathedral opposite via the tunnel.
