Fort Belgica is the pentagonal Dutch fort on the low hill above Banda Neira, and the thing most write ups get wrong is its age. Pieter Both, the first Governor General of the Dutch East Indies, ordered a fort here on 4 September 1611, but what you walk around today is not that building. The fort was redesigned under Cornelis Speelman from 1667 by the engineer Adriaan de Leeuw, with major works in 1672 and completion in 1673. It is a double pentagon, a low outer wall with five angled bastions enclosing a higher inner block with five circular corner towers, and it was heavily restored in 1991 on the orders of Benny Moerdani, then defence minister.
Climb one of the corner towers and the whole reason the Dutch fought for these islands lays itself out below you: the harbour, the roofs of Banda Neira, the strait, and the cone of Gunung Api rising straight out of the water opposite. It is the most complete colonial structure in the Bandas and the easiest to visit, ten or fifteen minutes uphill from the harbour on foot.
It is worth arriving with the history in your head rather than reading it afterwards, because the walls make more sense that way. This fort existed to hold a monopoly by force. Fort Nassau, down on the shore below, is where the orang kaya of Banda were executed in May 1621, and Belgica was built to make sure nothing like Bandanese resistance could happen again. Nothing on site tells you that in any detail, so the twenty minutes you spend reading up beforehand does more for the visit than the ticket does.

The fort sits on a hill inside Banda Neira town, an easy walk of about ten to fifteen minutes uphill from the harbour and from most guesthouses. Nothing more than your own feet is required. On fees and hours, be prepared for informality. Sources conflict on the entry charge, with some describing a donation of around IDR 10,000 collected in lieu of a ticket and others quoting around IDR 20,000, and none describing a properly staffed ticket booth. Published opening hours of roughly 08:00 to 17:00 circulate widely, but travellers report that Banda's heritage sites in practice open sporadically, often in the afternoon and often when a ship or liveaboard is in port. Ask your guesthouse the night before, carry small notes, and do not build a tight schedule around a fixed opening time.

Late afternoon is the pick, when the heat drops and the light over the harbour and Gunung Api is at its best. Early morning is cooler and quieter if you would rather have the ramparts to yourself. In terms of the wider season, the reliable windows for reaching Banda at all are roughly March to April and September to December. June and July are effectively closed, with at least one resident dive operator publishing a calendar that shuts for both months, and sea conditions can strand you either side of them.

Carry cash. There is no card payment anywhere on the site and the charge, when there is one, is collected informally by a caretaker. Wear shoes with a bit of grip. The stone stairs up the corner towers are worn and railings are minimal, and the ramparts have almost no shade, so bring water and a hat. If the gate is shut when you arrive, it is normal to ask around rather than to assume the fort is closed for the day.
