A 120-metre jet of water dropping off the cliffs at the northern end of Lake Toba.
Sipiso-piso is a single thin blade of water dropping around 120 metres off the northern rim of the Toba caldera above the village of Tongging. The name comes from the Batak word piso, a knife, and the fall genuinely does look like one: a narrow white line rather than a broad curtain.
The geology is the interesting part. This is not a river that happens to reach a cliff. An underground stream draining the Karo plateau emerges straight out of a cave mouth in the caldera wall and falls clear from there, which is why the flow appears from nowhere partway up the rock face.
A word on numbers, because guides and websites muddle them constantly. The waterfall drops about 120 metres. The site itself sits at over 800 metres above sea level. Anyone describing an 800-metre waterfall has run the two figures together.
From the clifftop platform you get the shot everyone comes for: the falls on one side, the northern arm of Lake Toba spread out below on the other. A stone stairway of 651 steps switchbacks down to the base, where you feel the spray and get a proper sense of the height. Going down is easy and takes a while. Coming back up 651 steps at altitude is the part people underestimate, and there is no shortcut.
It is at the opposite end of the lake from Samosir, in Karo regency rather than Samosir regency, so almost nobody visits it from Tuk Tuk as a round trip.

가는 방법
Sipiso-piso is at Desa Tongging in Merek district, Karo regency, at the far northern tip of the caldera, well away from the Tuk Tuk side. From Kabanjahe it is roughly 25 to 30 km, about an hour along the Jamin Ginting road, and from Berastagi it is a similar short hop. Almost everyone sees it as a stop on the overland drive between Medan or Berastagi and the lake rather than as a day trip from Samosir, which would mean the length of the lake and back. A chartered car or a guided day tour is the practical option; public transport to Tongging exists but is slow and awkward with luggage.
가기 좋은 시기
Morning, for two reasons: the light falls better on the falls and the lake, and the cloud that builds over the caldera rim through the afternoon often swallows the view entirely. The falls run hardest during and just after the wet season, while the dry months give cleaner air and a sharper lake panorama, so there is a genuine trade-off between volume and visibility. Weekday mornings also mean fewer domestic tour buses on the small clifftop platform.
알아두면 좋은 점
Entry is only a few thousand rupiah plus parking (a 2023 report put it at IDR 7,500 for adults, so budget a little more now), and it is cash. Be realistic about the stairway. It is 651 steps down to the base and the same back up at over 800 metres of elevation, with limited shade and no facilities at the bottom. Wear shoes with grip, since the lower steps stay damp from spray, and carry water. The clifftop viewpoint alone gives you the famous view, and there is no shame in skipping the descent. If you do go down, allow far more time for the return than the way in.
The water drops about 120 metres in a single plunge. The confusion you may see online comes from the site's elevation, which is over 800 metres above sea level; that is the altitude of the viewpoint, not the height of the fall.
651 steps from the main entrance down to the foot of the falls. The descent is straightforward, but climbing back up at this altitude is genuinely hard work, so only start down if you are happy with that.
No. The clifftop platform already gives the classic view of the waterfall with Lake Toba behind it. The stairway is entirely optional.
It is at the opposite, northern end of the lake in Karo regency, which means several hours each way by road. Most travellers stop here while driving between Medan or Berastagi and the lake rather than making a round trip from Samosir.
An underground river draining the Karo plateau emerges from a cave in the caldera wall and falls straight from there. That is why the water seems to appear out of the rock face rather than flowing over a lip.
