A short, steep climb to the ridge where three curved bays fan out below you.
Padar's summit ridge looks down on three bays that curl away in different directions, each fringed with a different tone of sand. That one view is the reason boats stop here, and it has become the most reproduced image in Komodo National Park after the dragons themselves.
The climb starts at a small jetty on the eastern shore. A stepped path handles the lower half, then it turns to bare rock and loose gravel. Most reasonably fit people reach the main viewpoint in 30 to 45 minutes. Nothing about it is technical, but it is steep, completely exposed, and there is no water sold anywhere on the island. In the dry months the hills go the colour of straw, and the wind along the top can be strong enough to make the narrow sections feel uncomfortable.
There are no Komodo dragons on Padar and no facilities beyond the jetty. What there is, in quantity, is other people. Since 1 April 2026 the park has run a hard daily visitor cap, and Padar is now divided into timed sessions through the day rather than the open free-for-all of previous years. Slots are booked in advance through the park's official online reservation system, so a Padar climb is no longer something you can decide on at the harbour that morning.
Even with the cap, sunrise concentrates everyone onto a few metres of rock at the top, and the final scramble bottlenecks. The light really is better then and the walking is far cooler, so the trade is a genuine one. If you would rather have space on the ridge than the best light, take a later session and accept the heat.

Padar is reached only by boat from Labuan Bajo, and it is almost always bundled into a wider Komodo itinerary rather than visited on its own. Shared speedboats run it as a long day trip, private speedboats let you control your arrival time, and slower wooden boats usually fold it into an overnight or two-night loop with a night at anchor. The fee position changed in October 2024, when a new government regulation set a flat entry charge for foreign visitors to Komodo National Park and bundled trekking and snorkelling into that single ticket rather than charging them separately. As of 2026 the foreign visitor figure is IDR 250,000 per person per visit, with diving charged as a small extra. A further increase was discussed by the forestry ministry but was still under study as of April 2026. Park pricing here has a long history of sudden change and public argument, so treat any figure you read, including this one, as something to confirm with your operator at the time of booking. Since 1 April 2026, entry also requires a pre-booked slot through the park's official SiOra reservation platform, which most operators arrange for you.

Sunrise is the classic slot for cool air and soft light, and it is also the busiest by a wide margin. Late afternoon is quieter but hotter on the way up, and leaves you descending against fading light. The dry season, roughly April to November, gives the clearest air and the bare golden hills of the postcard shots. In the wetter months the slopes green up, which some people prefer, and the boat crossing is rougher.

Wear shoes with real grip. The upper section is loose rock and gravel, and flip-flops are the single most common cause of slips, most of them on the way down rather than up. Carry your own water because nothing is sold on the island, and take a hat, since there is no shade between the jetty and the top. Book your park slot well ahead in peak months now that daily numbers are capped, and check that your operator has actually done it before you pay. The crossing from Labuan Bajo is open water and can be choppy, so if you are prone to seasickness, take something before you board rather than once you start to feel it.
