Gili Trawangan is the largest and busiest of the three islands, and the one people pick for dive shops, beach bars and company. There are no cars and no motorbikes anywhere on it. Local ordinance bans motor vehicles, so everything moves by bicycle, on foot, or by cidomo, the small horse carts that also handle luggage and freight. Walking the full ring road takes a couple of hours at an easy pace.
The island has a clear split. The east side facing Lombok is the hub, with the boat landing, the restaurants, the night market and most of the noise. The west and north are quieter, with better swimming, easy reef access straight off the beach, and sunsets looking back towards Bali and the cone of Mount Agung on clear evenings. Where you stay decides what kind of trip you have far more than anything else.
Be clear-eyed about the party reputation. Trawangan has long had one, drugs are openly touted on the main strip, and none of that means any of it is legal. Indonesian narcotics law is severe and applies to visitors exactly as it does to anyone else. The standard caution about spirits and unlabelled local liquor in cheap bars applies here as it does across Indonesia, and sticking to sealed bottled drinks is the sensible default.
The electric bike question is genuinely unsettled. They have appeared on the island despite the vehicle ban, and local authorities have enforced against them in the past, so do not assume you can hire one.

Fast boats run to Gili Trawangan from several ports in Bali, typically taking somewhere between one and a half and two and a half hours depending on the departure point and the sea. Short local boats also connect from Bangsal harbour on Lombok, which is much the cheaper route if you are already on the mainland. Boats land on the main east-side beach and you walk or take a cidomo to your accommodation. The crossing is the part worth planning around. It is open water, it can be genuinely rough, and services are cancelled in bad weather with little notice. Do not schedule a Gili crossing for the same day as an international flight out of Denpasar, and build in a buffer day if the trip matters.

The dry season, roughly May to September, brings the calmest crossings and the best underwater visibility. July and August are the busiest and liveliest months, with prices and noise to match. The west-side sunset is the daily fixed point whatever the season, and the wetter months bring rougher water and a higher chance of a cancelled boat.

Refill your water bottle at one of the island's refill stations rather than buying single-use plastic; the local environmental trust has put in a large network of them.
