The active smoking cone you climb by a stairway, peering into a sulphurous crater.
After sunrise, the jeep drops you on the sea of sand below Mount Bromo itself, the active cone at the centre of the caldera. From the parking area you cross the grey ash plain on foot or on a rented horse, past a small Hindu temple, to the base of the cone. A concrete stairway of around 250 steps then climbs to the rim.
At the top you stand at a railing on the lip of an active crater, looking down into a smoking, sulphur-streaked vent. The wind carries the smell of sulphur and the ground rumbles faintly.
The railing only covers part of the rim and the drop is real, so this is exhilarating rather than relaxing. Bromo occasionally closes when volcanic activity rises, so check the status before you go.

Bromo is the second stop on the standard jeep tour, after Penanjakan sunrise. The jeep parks on the sea of sand, from where it is a 30 to 45 minute walk across the ash to the stairs, or a short horse ride for a negotiated fee. The final ascent is the stairway up the cone.

Go straight after sunrise, before the day-trip crowds thicken on the stairs and while the air is still cool. The dry season gives firmer footing on the sand; the wet season can leave the ash plain muddy. Always confirm the crater is open, as the park restricts access during eruptive phases.

Bring a scarf or mask, as wind whips ash and sulphur across the plain. Wear closed shoes and expect them to fill with grey dust. Horse handlers and the staircase get crowded, so settle the horse price first and watch your footing on the steps, which have no rail on the open side.
Around 250 concrete steps lead from the ash plain to the crater rim. It is short but steep at altitude, so take it slowly if you feel the thin air.
A horse covers the flat ash plain to the base of the stairs but not the steps themselves. It is optional and handy if you are tired, but agree the price clearly before you ride.
Usually yes, but it is an active volcano and the rim railing is partial with a real drop. The national park closes the crater during periods of higher activity, so check the current status before visiting.
