The old spice-trade town where Europe once fought over nutmeg, now quiet and walkable.
Banda Neira is the main town of the Banda Islands and the historic centre of the nutmeg trade that drew the Dutch, English and Portuguese into wars over a handful of specks in the Maluku Sea. Everything is within about fifteen minutes' walk of the harbour: Fort Belgica on the hill, the ruins of Fort Nassau on the shore below, Istana Mini, the Dutch church, and the Rumah Budaya museum.
The town rewards knowing what you are looking at. Fort Nassau, begun in 1609, is now roughly half gone, with two bastions and the north wall collapsed and the interior buildings destroyed. The Ministry of Culture said in 2025 that it intends to restore the damaged northern bastion, but the work is blocked because the bastion stands on certificated private land, with a valuation exercise in August 2025 the only step taken so far. No budget and no completion date have been announced. The Dutch church you see dates from 1852, rebuilt after an earthquake destroyed the seventeenth century original, and its floor carries somewhere between roughly two dozen and thirty granite grave slabs of Dutch officials and plantation holders.
Banda Neira also has an unusually dense exile history. Mohammad Hatta and Sutan Sjahrir were held here from February 1936 until 1942, and their houses are open as small museums. Tjipto Mangunkusumo had been exiled here nine years earlier, in December 1927, and his house on Jalan Pendidikan can also be visited. The Rumah Budaya museum, at around IDR 20,000, is the most reliably priced ticket in the islands and does the best job of laying out what happened here in 1621.

가는 방법
Banda is reached via Ambon, and the connection is the least reliable part of any trip here. Small propeller aircraft fly the roughly 40 minute hop to Banda Neira, but the operator has changed repeatedly and current sources name different airlines, seats cannot be booked online, and the baggage allowance is around ten kilograms. Book through your Banda guesthouse or an Ambon agent and expect weather cancellations. The alternative is a Pelni ferry from Ambon, somewhere between seven and fifteen hours depending on the ship, bought at the port a day or two ahead. Sources disagree on how often it sails, from two or three times a week to roughly fortnightly, and the frequency may itself be seasonal. A fast ferry from Tulehu ran historically but at least one recent source says it has stopped, so do not plan around it. Whichever way you come, build in buffer days at both ends.
가기 좋은 시기
Aim for the calmer windows, roughly March to April and September to December, when flights and ferries run more reliably and the diving is at its best. June and July are effectively the closed season: the islands' resident dive operator publishes a calendar that shuts for both months. May and August are workable but marginal. Rough seas do not just make the crossing unpleasant, they cancel it.
알아두면 좋은 점
Withdraw cash in Ambon before you travel. Reports on whether Banda Neira's ATM works, and whether it accepts foreign cards, contradict each other even within the same operator's website, and money changing on the islands gives poor rates. Buy and register an Indonesian SIM in Ambon or Jakarta too, because you cannot register one on the islands. Most guesthouses have wifi of some sort. Stay in one of the heritage guesthouses, which are the best source of local history and will arrange your flights, boats and guides. One correction worth carrying: the Banda Islands are on Indonesia's UNESCO tentative list and have been for years, but they are not an inscribed World Heritage Site, whatever the brochures say.
History, with diving a close second. This was the centre of the seventeenth century nutmeg trade that European powers fought over, and the forts, colonial houses, church and Rumah Budaya museum tell that story in a town small enough to walk in an afternoon.
Via Ambon, either on a small propeller aircraft taking about 40 minutes, which cannot be booked online and has a roughly ten kilogram baggage limit, or on a Pelni ferry taking somewhere between seven and fifteen hours. Sources disagree on the current airline and on ferry frequency, so book through your guesthouse.
At least three to five, and more if you can. Getting there is slow and weather dependent, cancellations are routine, and the islands reward a relaxed pace. Build buffer days at both ends so a cancelled flight does not wreck the rest of your trip.
No. They sit on Indonesia's UNESCO tentative list and have done for over a decade, but they have not been inscribed. A more recent and concrete development is the Laut Banda marine protected area entering the IUCN Green List process in 2025.
Fort Belgica on the hill, the ruins of Fort Nassau below it, the 1852 Dutch church with granite grave slabs set into the floor, Istana Mini, the Rumah Budaya museum at around IDR 20,000 in recent years, and the exile houses of Hatta and Sjahrir, held here from 1936 to 1942, plus Tjipto Mangunkusumo's house from his 1927 exile.
Sources contradict each other, and some operators' own websites carry both answers on different pages. Assume you cannot rely on one, withdraw enough cash in Ambon before you travel, and do not expect foreign cards to work.
