살레 만, 숨바와

A multi-tier mainland waterfall near Sempe village, named the 'talking water' by locals.
Ai Beling is in the hills of Moyo Hulu district, inland and south of Sumbawa Besar near Sempe village, and the first thing to clear up is that it has nothing to do with Moyo Island despite the name overlap. This is mainland Sumbawa, reached by road, in Dusun Kuang Amo.
The water spills out of gaps in the rock and runs down a long staircase of stone tiers rather than dropping off a cliff, forming shallow pools at the bottom that are noticeably cold and shallow enough to stand in. The name is straightforward Samawa, the Sumbawa language: ai means water and beling means sound. Local accounts say it is named for the constant rush of the water, which carries a long way through the valley. There are steps and a few open shelters at the site.
It sees mostly domestic visitors and stays quiet on weekdays. Be honest with yourself about the trip, though: it is a good hour to an hour and a half each way from Sumbawa Besar for a modest waterfall, and the site's upkeep is not what it should be. Local reporting in May 2025 found rubbish scattered across the area with no bins provided, and the toilets in an unusable state. Entry itself is described as free with a small parking charge of around IDR 5,000 in 2025 listings, so nobody is funding maintenance out of ticket revenue. Come with your own water, take your rubbish home, and do not count on facilities.

가는 방법
From Sumbawa Besar it is roughly 40 kilometres south along the Sumbawa to Lunyuk road towards Sempe village, taking somewhere between an hour and an hour and a half depending on the source and your vehicle. The road is sealed but steep in places, and the last couple of hundred metres are rough and unsealed. Cars cannot reach the parking area itself, so the final approach is about a fifteen minute walk in. A motorbike is the easier option, and hiring a local driver or guide makes finding the turning far less painful than navigating alone. In 2025 listings entry was free with parking at around IDR 5,000 per vehicle, and opening hours were given as roughly 07:00 to 18:00, though this is a single source.
가기 좋은 시기
The dry season, roughly May to September, gives safer footing on the rocks and clearer water with a steady flow. Avoid going right after heavy rain, when the current strengthens and the stone tiers turn slippery. Weekdays are much quieter than weekends, when the site draws local families and the litter problem is at its most visible.
알아두면 좋은 점
Wear shoes with grip, because the tiers are wet, mossy and steeper than they photograph. Bring all your own water and snacks: there is very little sold and, on the evidence of 2025 reporting, the toilets are not usable and no bins are provided. Carry your rubbish back out with you. This is not a lecture, it is the practical position at a site with free entry and no waste collection. Small cash is worth having for parking or any informal local charge.
No. Despite the name overlap with Moyo Island, Ai Beling is on mainland Sumbawa, in Dusun Kuang Amo, Sempe village, Moyo Hulu district, and is reached by road from Sumbawa Besar rather than by boat.

Yes. The water runs down a series of stone tiers into shallow pools at the base that are cold and shallow enough to stand in. The rocks are slippery, so move carefully, and stay clear of the falls when the flow is strong after rain.
About 40 kilometres south, taking somewhere between one hour and an hour and a half depending on the vehicle and the source. The road is sealed but steep, the final stretch is rough, and cars cannot reach the parking area, so allow around fifteen minutes on foot at the end.
Listings from 2025 describe entry as free with parking at around IDR 5,000 per vehicle, and opening hours of roughly 07:00 to 18:00, though that comes from a single source. Carry small cash in case a local charge is collected.
Not great. Local reporting in May 2025 found rubbish scattered across the site with no bins provided and the toilets in unusable condition. Bring your own water, do not rely on facilities, and take your rubbish away with you.
