The arrival island and main gateway, with the airport, the bank, and easy shore reefs.
Wangi-Wangi, usually shortened to Wanci, is the northernmost of Wakatobi's four main islands and the gateway to the whole archipelago. The name Wakatobi is an acronym of the four: Wangi-Wangi, Kaledupa, Tomia, Binongko. Matahora airport is here, along with Wanci town, the main market, the district offices and the most reliable banking in the islands. If you are travelling independently rather than flying straight into a resort, this is where your trip starts and where it usually ends.
Air access is the thing to understand before anything else, because it has been unstable. Scheduled service from Kendari stopped in December 2024 and Matahora sat effectively dormant for most of a year before FlyJaya launched a twice-weekly Kendari route in October 2025. Other carriers have come and gone. Whatever schedule you find quoted, verify it directly with the airline within days of travelling, and build spare days into both ends of your trip.
The island itself is worth a day or two rather than a rush through. Bajau stilt villages, including Mola, stand out over the water on the south of the island, built by a seafaring people who historically lived almost entirely at sea. The west coast around Sombu drops onto reef within swimming distance of shore, and the national park promotes Sombu among its dive points. Sunsets over the channel are quietly good.
Most travellers use Wangi-Wangi as a base, a resupply point and a buffer against cancelled flights, which is exactly the right way to think about it.
行き方
Wakatobi is reached through Wangi-Wangi. The air route is Kendari to Matahora, and as of late 2025 that was operated twice weekly by FlyJaya on Tuesdays and Fridays, with a flight time of around an hour. Service on this route has been interrupted before, so confirm with the airline rather than relying on any published guide, including this one. The ferry is the reliable backup. Boats run from Kendari to Wanci port in roughly ten hours, generally leaving in the morning, with several operators working the route. There is also a well-used approach from Bau-Bau on Buton, going overland to Pasarwajo or Lasalimu and then across by boat, which is often quicker overall than going via Kendari. Onward travel between the islands is by Cantika fast boat and local speedboats, which do not run daily: expect departures every two or three days from each island.
ベストシーズン
The dry season, roughly April to October, brings calmer seas, easier crossings and the clearest water for snorkelling off the shore reefs. Mornings are the settled part of any day here, which is also when boats and onward transfers tend to leave, so plan movements for early rather than afternoon. Note that the Hoga expedition season concentrates in the middle of the year, so if the wider archipelago is on your route, June to August has the most going on and the most people moving between islands.
知っておきたいこと
Draw out plenty of cash on Wangi-Wangi. This is the most developed island in the group and banking gets thinner or disappears entirely as you head south through the chain. Foreign visitors also pay a national park entry fee per person per day, charged at a higher rate at weekends and public holidays, with separate small daily supplements for diving and snorkelling, all payable in cash and bookable through the park's own ticketing. Confirm every onward boat or flight the day before, and keep at least one buffer day at each end of the trip, because a missed Kendari connection can cost you several days rather than several hours. Bring your own mask and fins, since rental is limited outside the resorts. At the Bajau villages, ask before photographing people or entering houses, and go with someone local rather than wandering in unannounced. Pack any medication you need, as pharmacies here carry a narrow range.
Almost everyone comes through Wangi-Wangi. The air route is Kendari to Matahora airport, operated twice weekly by FlyJaya as of late 2025. The alternative is the ferry from Kendari to Wanci, around ten hours, or the crossing from Bau-Bau on Buton via Pasarwajo or Lasalimu. Verify flights directly with the airline, because this route has stopped and restarted before.
This is the most developed island in the chain, with the main town, the market and the best banking in the archipelago. Coverage and services thin out considerably on Kaledupa, Tomia and Binongko, so withdraw the cash you need for your whole trip here rather than assuming you can top up later.
Yes. Wakatobi National Park charges foreign visitors a per-person daily entry fee, at a higher rate on weekends and public holidays, with small additional daily charges for diving and for snorkelling. Domestic rates are much lower. Tickets are handled through the park's own ticketing system and paid in cash.
Yes. The west coast, including the area around Sombu, has reef within a short swim of the shore, and Sombu appears among the national park's promoted dive points. Bring your own mask and fins, because rental options outside the resorts are limited.
A night or two on the way in and ideally another on the way out. It works as a base for day boats to nearby reefs, as a place to sort cash and supplies, and above all as a buffer against a cancelled or rescheduled flight, which is a real possibility on this route.
The stilt villages, including Mola, are visitable and the national park promotes Bajo village among its visitor destinations. Go with a local guide or boatman rather than turning up alone, ask before taking photographs of people or houses, and remember these are homes rather than an attraction.
