An A-frame reef break near Hu'u offering both lefts and rights over shallow coral.
Lakey Peak is the headline wave on Sumbawa's south coast, an A frame off a shallow reef at Hu'u that breaks left and right off the same takeoff. The left is the longer wall, the right is short and fast, and the whole thing sits maybe 450 to 500 metres off the sand, so getting out is a paddle rather than a stroll.
What makes Hu'u worth the drive is that it is not one wave but five within a short walk or a short boat ride. Lakey Pipe is a hollow left barrel around 300 metres south, and it is the one that hurts people. Periscopes is a steep right about five minutes north by boat. Nungas, a couple of hundred metres north, is the long peeler most people learn on, and Cobblestones, seven minutes south by boat, is the mellow cobble reef option. Between them you can usually find something rideable across a range of ability and swell size.
The season is well established: dry season from May to October, with a southwest swell and an east south east offshore lining the Peak up best. Forecast data singles out June as producing clean, surfable waves the overwhelming majority of the time. Water and air sit around 28 degrees year round.
The reef is shallow, sharp and unforgiving at low tide, which is the main thing that separates this from Bali's beach breaks. There is a strip of losmen and warungs behind the beach so you can check the lineup from bed, but two things happened recently that are worth knowing: tidal flooding in November 2025 badly damaged the beachfront walkway between the Peak and Nungas, and residents were still hand patching the access road in April 2026.

行き方
Hu'u sits on Sumbawa's south coast in Dompu regency. The usual approach is to fly into Bima (BMU), about ten kilometres south of Bima town, then drive. Estimates for that drive vary widely between sources, from ninety minutes to four hours, with recent accounts clustering around two to three hours. TransNusa launched a Denpasar to Bima route in December 2025, going daily later that month, alongside Wings Air services from Denpasar, Lombok and Makassar. Public transport is patchy and the last stretch is rural, so most surfers arrange a private transfer or charter, ideally through their losmen. Bear in mind that the access road was being repaired by police and residents at Dusun Mamboa in April 2026, which tells you what condition to expect. From the accommodation strip the breaks are a short walk or paddle, or a five to seven minute boat ride for Periscopes and Cobblestones.
ベストシーズン
The season runs May to October, with June to September the most consistent for size and clean offshore mornings. A southwest swell with an east south east wind lines the Peak up best, and forecast data picks out June as the single most reliable month for clean surf. April and May bring lighter winds but smaller swell. Tide matters as much as swell: the reef is shallowest and least forgiving at low water, so check the tide before paddling out anywhere here.
知っておきたいこと
Bring booties, a spare leash and a proper first aid kit including something for reef cuts, which are the standard injury here rather than a rare one. Lakey Pipe in particular is described as nasty on bigger days and is not a wave to test yourself on. Respect the lineup order, because it is a small, regular crowd and reputations travel. On accommodation, several losmen have live 2025 and 2026 booking pages, but a number of names that circulate in older articles could not be confirmed as still trading, so book somewhere you can actually reach rather than turning up on the strength of a listicle. Note also that the Lakey festival ran in July 2025 but had no funding or date confirmed for 2026, so do not plan a trip around it.
Not the Peak itself. It is a shallow reef break best suited to confident intermediate and advanced surfers. Nungas, a couple of hundred metres north, is the long peeler beginners and improvers usually start on, and Cobblestones to the south is mellower again.

Sharp and very shallow at low tide, with reef cuts a routine rather than unusual injury. Surf around higher tide where you can, wear booties, and treat Lakey Pipe with particular caution on bigger days. No official injury statistics are published for the break.
Mixed. Tidal flooding in November 2025 caused abrasion that severely damaged the beachfront walkway between the Peak and Nungas, and police and residents were hand repairing the Lakey access road at Dusun Mamboa in April 2026. Whether the walkway has since been rebuilt is unclear.
