A ring of 48 life-size human figures sunk off Gili Meno, now growing coral.
Nest is an underwater sculpture by Jason deCaires Taylor, installed off Gili Meno in 2017: a ring of 48 life-size human figures kneeling and standing on the seabed, arranged in a circle. The artist describes it as an environmental space and an echo of the circle of life, and it was commissioned by a nearby resort and gifted to the local community.
It sits in about four metres of water, close enough to swim to from the west-facing beach, which means snorkellers see it clearly from the surface without needing to dive. Free-divers and scuba divers get closer and can move through the ring, but nobody needs a certification to get the point of it.
The figures were cast from pH-neutral marine cement over a stainless steel frame, chosen so that coral, algae and sponges will settle on them. That is the actual purpose rather than a side effect: the work is designed as an artificial reef, and after several years in the water the figures have taken on a distinctly furred, colonised look. People expecting the crisp white statues of the original press photographs are usually surprised, though the growth is the piece working as intended rather than neglect.
It has become one of the most photographed things in the Gilis, and that is the main problem with it. By mid-morning the boats stack up over a circle only a few metres across, and you end up queueing in open water for a clear view. Almost everything about the experience depends on when you arrive rather than what you bring.

From Gili Trawangan or Gili Air it is a short boat ride, included on nearly every Gili snorkelling and island-hopping tour, and glass-bottom boats run to it daily. From Gili Meno itself you can often swim out from the west-facing beach, which is the cheapest and quietest way to see it if you are already staying on the island. There is no separate ticket for the sculpture itself. It sits in open water and access comes down to whichever boat or beach you approach it from.

Take the earliest morning boats, before the day tours arrive, for calm water, better light and far fewer people over a very small site. Visibility is generally best in the drier months from roughly May to September. Midday brings both crowds and choppier conditions, and on a busy day the circle can have several boats above it at once.

Currents can run across the site, so weaker swimmers should wear a flotation vest and stay near the boat rather than striking out alone. It looks close to shore and is still open water. Do not stand on, hold or climb the figures. They are a living reef surface now, and the growth on them is fragile as well as being the entire point of the work. If you want a photograph without other people in it, the only reliable method is to be on the first boat of the day.
