Canggu's main beach: a forgiving longboard wave, sunset crowds, and the Old Man's scene.
Batu Bolong is the centre of gravity in Canggu and the beach most people learn to surf on. The surf schools cluster here, Canggu is one of the few genuinely longboard-friendly stretches on the island, and beginners who turn up at the reef breaks further west get sent back to this beach instead. The sand is dark volcanic grey rather than gold, and a Hindu temple, Pura Batu Bolong, sits directly on the beach beside the lineup. It is a different temple from the Batu Bolong inside the Tanah Lot complex, which confuses a surprising number of visitors.
The beach itself is under real pressure. An academic assessment of Bali's coastline picked out the 1.26 kilometre stretch from Pantai Batu Mejan to Pantai Batu Bolong as suffering erosion damage needing the highest priority for intervention. Island-wide, roughly 200 kilometres of Bali's 633 kilometres of coast is eroding and only around 122 kilometres has been treated. Expect a narrower beach than older photographs suggest, and coastal works somewhere in view.
Two things a first-time visitor should know. The water is not always clean: testing at Batu Bolong in June 2023 by Yayasan Bali Bersih with the Westerlaken Foundation returned E. coli at the top of the measurement scale. That figure is several years old now and no more recent public result was found, but it is a good reason not to swallow the water. And these are working surf beaches with genuine currents. A 69-year-old French visitor drowned at Batu Bolong in May 2025, one of three drownings recorded on the Canggu coast that year.
The scene is as much the draw as the wave. From late afternoon the strip becomes a sunset gathering: busy, loud, sociable, and not the place to come looking for quiet.

行き方
Batu Bolong is the heart of Canggu, so from most local accommodation it is a short scooter ride or a walk. Berawa is about 10 minutes east and Echo Beach a similar hop west, though the Canggu traffic makes those times optimistic in the late afternoon. Parking near the beach entrance is paid and fills up well before sunset. Badung Regency is building a new relief road connecting Jalan Subak Sari in Tibubeneng to Umalas, with the contract signed in May 2026 and a construction period of 210 days. It is a new route rather than a widening of the notorious Canggu shortcut, so expect roadworks in the area through the second half of 2026 rather than immediate relief.
ベストシーズン
Mornings are calmer, cleaner and much better for a surf lesson, before the wind, the crowd and the traffic all build. Sunset is the social peak and the busiest hour of the day. Season matters more than most people expect: the west monsoon pushes marine debris onto Badung's beaches from roughly November to March, and around 4,800 tonnes of it was handled across the regency's coast over the 2025 to 2026 season, peaking near 500 tonnes a day in early 2026. Canggu is on that same coast and is affected, though its own tonnages are not broken out separately.

Lessons and board rental are easy to arrange on the sand, but agree the price, the duration and the group size before you start. Keep an eye on your belongings, since the sand gets very busy, and dress respectfully near the beachside temple. In the water, watch for surfers before you swim, stay inside any flagged area and treat the currents seriously: Balawista Badung is the beach safety organisation covering this coast, but do not assume a patrol is on duty wherever you happen to be standing. Given the June 2023 water quality result, avoid swallowing seawater here, and think twice about swimming after heavy rain. Venues on the strip open and close frequently, so check what is actually trading rather than relying on an old list.
It is Canggu's main learner and longboard beach, with the densest cluster of surf schools and board rental in the area. Surfers at the reef breaks further west are routinely redirected here, which tells you most of what you need to know. It does get crowded with other learners.
You can, but treat it as a surf beach rather than a swimming beach. There are real currents, and three drownings were recorded on the Canggu coast during 2025, including a 69-year-old French visitor at Batu Bolong in May. Stay inside flagged areas, watch for surfers, and do not assume a lifeguard is on duty.
Not reliably. Testing at Batu Bolong in June 2023 by Yayasan Bali Bersih with the Westerlaken Foundation found E. coli at the top of the measurement scale. That result is now several years old and no newer public figure was found, but it is a sound reason to avoid swallowing the water, particularly after heavy rain.
Erosion. A coastal assessment identified the 1.26 kilometre stretch from Pantai Batu Mejan to Pantai Batu Bolong as needing the highest priority for intervention. Roughly 200 kilometres of Bali's 633 kilometre coastline is eroding, and coastal works are ongoing in various places.
No. Pura Batu Bolong on Canggu beach is a separate temple from the Pura Batu Bolong inside the Tanah Lot complex, roughly 300 metres north of the main Tanah Lot rock. The shared name causes a lot of confusion when people are planning.
Roughly November to March, when the west monsoon carries marine debris onto Badung's coast. Around 4,800 tonnes was handled across the regency over the 2025 to 2026 season, peaking near 500 tonnes a day in early 2026, mostly driftwood and plastic arriving from other islands.
