The highlands around Ciwidey and Rancabali, south of Bandung, are covered in tea, planted in tight rows that follow the contours of the hills so the whole landscape reads as a set of green fingerprints. There is no convenient public transport: it can be done by piecing together angkot minibuses, but it is slow and awkward and not worth it unless the budget demands it.

That is when the light is clearest across the rows, when the pickers are actually working, and when you have the lowest chance of the afternoon mist and rain that regularly close the hills in. Weekdays are considerably calmer than weekends, when domestic visitors fill the lakeside at Situ Patenggang and queue at the photo spots. Starting early also gets you ahead of the return traffic into Bandung, which builds badly in the late afternoon.
