Padang Padang Beach

Small cove reached through a slot in the cliff, famous from Eat Pray Love and often packed.

Padang Padang is a short cove on the Bukit reached by a set of steps down the cliff and then a squeeze through a gap in the limestone barely wide enough for two people. That gap is the whole trick of the place: you come through it and the cove opens up in front of you, framed by rock, with monkeys sitting on the boulders above.

It is small. Genuinely small. By late morning in high season the sand fills from the cliff to the waterline with sunbathers, vendors, day-trippers being photographed at the rock arch, and the queue of people waiting to come through the gap builds up behind you. The Eat Pray Love connection turned it into a fixture on every south Bali itinerary and it has never really recovered from the attention.

Offshore is the Padang Padang reef break, a heavy, hollow left that breaks over shallow coral and is strictly for experienced surfers. It needs a solid south-west swell to work, runs best around mid tide and hosts international competitions when it is on. When it is not working the water in the cove is calm enough to wade and swim in, which is what most visitors do. There is a separate, gentler wave known locally as the right, further along, where surf schools do take beginners, but that is not the wave the beach is famous for.

Come early and it is a pretty, sheltered cove with good light and space to sit. Come at noon and it is a queue with a view.

如何到达

Padang Padang is on the main Uluwatu road near the bridge, roughly ten to twenty minutes by scooter or car from most accommodation around Uluwatu, Bingin and Pecatu. Park in the roadside lot by the bridge, pay the parking attendant and then the entrance fee at the small ticket window, both in cash. From the ticket window a flight of concrete steps runs down the cliff face, ending at the narrow rock gap that opens onto the sand. It is a short descent compared with Bingin or Suluban, but the steps are steep and the gap is a genuine bottleneck when a tour group is coming the other way. There is no vehicle access to the beach itself.

Early, soon after the gate opens in the morning. That is the only reliable way to have space on the sand and the arch to yourself, and the light in the cove is better before the sun is overhead. Low tide gives you noticeably more beach. Late afternoon is the second best option, once the day-trip buses have moved on to Uluwatu Temple for sunset. Avoid the middle of the day in July and August entirely if crowds bother you. For surfers, the break needs a solid south or south-west swell, which is most consistent from around June to September.

Entry is a small per-person fee collected in cash at the gate, widely reported at around IDR 15,000 in 2025, plus parking. There is no card payment, so bring notes. The steps and the rock gap get slippery, and there is no handrail through the narrow section, so watch your footing with a bag or a board. Monkeys sit on the rocks above the steps and will take food, bottles and sunglasses, so keep things zipped away on the way down. Bring your own water and a towel, since the beach is small and vendor prices reflect the captive audience. If you want to swim, stay in the cove and well clear of the reef where the wave breaks. And be realistic about the size of the place: this is a photo stop and a couple of hours, not a full beach day.

Can beginners surf at Padang Padang?+

Not at the main break. Padang Padang is a heavy, hollow left over shallow reef, it is for experienced surfers only and it hosts professional competitions. There is a separate, gentler wave nearby where surf schools teach, but ask a local school rather than paddling out on the reef yourself.

Is the beach really as crowded as people say?+

In high season, yes, particularly between about ten in the morning and three in the afternoon. The cove is very small, so even a moderate number of people fills it. Arriving close to opening or in the late afternoon makes a large difference.

Is there anywhere to change or leave belongings?+

Facilities are basic. There are warungs and vendors on and above the beach, but no proper lockers, so do not bring anything you would mind losing, and keep bags closed because of the monkeys on the steps.

Can you swim at Padang Padang?+

Yes, in the cove itself when the surf is small, and it is one of the more sheltered spots on this coast. Stay well away from the reef where the wave breaks, and check the water on the day, because a big swell wrapping into the bay changes the conditions completely.

How does it compare with Bingin next door?+

Padang Padang is easier to reach, smaller and much busier. Bingin has a far longer staircase, more sand at low tide and a more relaxed feel, though Bingin's cliffside was heavily affected by demolition works in 2025 and is still being rebuilt. Many people do both in a morning.
