Salodik Waterfall

Salodik is the waterfall you go to when you do not want to work for it. It sits in Salodik village, directly off the Trans Sulawesi highway northwest of Luwuk, and the water comes down a broad series of limestone shelves that genuinely look like a flight of stairs, spreading out and dropping again over and over rather than falling in one plume. It runs all year, including through the dry months, so unlike a lot of Sulawesi waterfalls it rarely disappoints on arrival.

The character of the place is social rather than wild. There is a car park, there are toilets, and there are gazebos you can rent for the afternoon, from small ones at a few tens of thousands of rupiah up to a large hall for a big group. Families spread out mats, run children through the shallow runs, and stay for hours. The entrance fee is nominal, quoted locally at only a couple of thousand rupiah per person, with gazebo hire on top and all of it paid in cash at the gate.

That accessibility cuts both ways. Because you can park almost at the water, weekends and public holidays bring a real crowd and the noise that goes with it, and the tiers nearest the entrance take a beating. Come on a weekday morning and you can have most of it to yourself. Manage your expectations on the swimming: the water spreads thin across wide shelves and the appeal is wading, sitting in the flow and eating lunch in the shade, not diving into a deep pool. If you want a swim, Piala on the other side of Luwuk is the better call.
