Tiered limestone pools on Moyo Island, the spot Princess Diana made famous in 1993.
Mata Jitu sits inland on Moyo Island, where a spring fed stream drops over pale limestone in a run of short tiers. The water carries dissolved minerals that tint the pools a soft blue green and build smooth travertine lips you can sit on, and the basins are shallow enough to wade and float in. It is commonly described as four tiers feeding around seven pools, though no two accounts give the same count. It is gentle rather than dramatic, a place to soak rather than to be impressed by volume.
The Princess Diana story is half true and worth getting right. Diana did holiday on Moyo in August 1993, staying at Amanwana courtesy of the Aman founder Adrian Zecha, and contemporaneous press put her there for two days within a five day trip to Indonesia. Whether she bathed at Mata Jitu is another matter: no contemporaneous report places her at the falls, and every version of that claim traces back to resort marketing and later blogs. The nickname Air Terjun Ratu, the Queen's Waterfall, is a tourism label applied afterwards. Take it as local tradition rather than documented fact.
One practical thing that will save you money. The track from Labuan Aji is signposted as seven kilometres, but travel writers who have walked it put the real distance closer to four kilometres, around an hour on foot, and describe the signposted figure bluntly as a way of getting visitors onto a motorbike taxi. The ride itself is about twenty minutes on a rough track followed by a short walk, and is genuinely useful if you are on a day trip clock.

First reach Moyo Island by boat from the Sumbawa Besar area, landing at Labuan Aji on the south coast. From the village a motorbike taxi takes around twenty minutes on a rough track, then it is a short walk down to the falls. Return ojek fares of around IDR 100,000 per person are quoted consistently across sources in 2024 and 2026, with some quoting less per bike, and the price is negotiable. On foot it is roughly an hour, not the two hours the seven kilometre signposting implies. Most day tours from the mainland include the transfer from the boat as part of the package, so check whether the ojek is already covered before paying twice. Since Moyo became a national park in 2022 there may be a park charge on top, and published figures for it are not corroborated by any official tariff.

May to September, the dry season, keeps the access track firm and the pools clear with a gentle flow, which is when the blue green colour shows best. After heavy rain the water turns cloudy and the track turns to mud. Go early in the day, before the day trip boats from the mainland arrive, because the pools are small and a single tour group fills them.

Wear sandals with grip. Wet travertine is genuinely slick and the lips between pools are the easiest place to come down hard. Bring your own water, as there is little sold at the falls. Agree the ojek price before you get on the bike, and know that the signposted seven kilometres overstates the real distance by a considerable margin. If you are reasonably fit and not on a tour clock, walking it through the cashew orchards is a perfectly good option. The West Nusa Tenggara conservation agency has flagged land clearing on the island as a threat to the water flow feeding these falls, so do not be surprised if flow varies from what photographs suggest.
