A cleaning and feeding station where reef manta rays cruise past snorkelers and divers.
Manta Point is a shallow channel where reef manta rays come to feed on plankton and to be cleaned by small fish that pick parasites off their skin. The cleaning stations are the reason they return to the same patches of reef, and it is why a site this specific exists at all rather than mantas simply being somewhere in the general sea.
They are large animals, commonly three to four metres across, and they feed near the surface with slow barrel rolls through the plankton. That surface behaviour is the whole appeal here: you do not need a diving certificate to get a proper look, and snorkellers often have a better view of a feeding manta than divers sitting on the bottom.
The currents that concentrate the plankton also make this an open-water site with surge, chop and real drift. The normal routine is to drop in, move with the flow rather than fight it, and let the boat reposition to collect you further along. People who are not confident swimmers find this genuinely hard work, and it is better to say so to your guide before you get in than to discover it halfway through.
Be realistic about numbers. Mantas are wild and move with the food, so a good day might put several in front of you and a poor one might produce a single shadow passing below. On busy days the site can also collect a lot of boats and snorkellers at once, which is unpleasant for the visitors and worse for the animals.
如何到达
Manta Point is a boat trip from Labuan Bajo harbour, included on many shared snorkelling and diving day tours and reachable by private speedboat. Dive operators run it as a guided drift dive, and snorkelling groups work the same channel from the surface. Komodo National Park entry applies. Since the October 2024 regulation change, snorkelling is bundled into the single foreign visitor entry ticket, listed at IDR 250,000 per person per visit as of 2026, while diving carries a small additional charge on top. Park fees here have changed repeatedly and remain politically contested, so confirm current amounts with your operator when booking rather than relying on a published figure.
最佳时节
Mantas can turn up year round, and sightings track plankton rather than the calendar, so no month guarantees anything. Calmer mornings make the swim considerably easier and the water less churned. Conditions and currents here change quickly, so the most useful rule is to trust your guide's judgement about when to get in and when to move on.

Keep your distance, do not touch or chase, and do not dive down towards a manta. Stay flat, stay still, and let the animal choose how close it comes, which in practice is also how you get the longest encounter. Groups that swim hard at mantas are the reason mantas leave. Be honest with your guide about your swimming ability, because the current is real and this is not a sheltered bay. A rash guard or thin wetsuit helps in choppy, cooler water, and a flotation aid is a sensible thing to ask for rather than an embarrassment.
Snorkelling works well here, because mantas feed near the surface and roll through the plankton in shallow water. You do not need a certification to have a good encounter. Diving gives you more time at the cleaning stations on the reef, but it is not required.
Be cautious. It is an open-water site with current, chop and drift, and the usual routine involves floating with the flow while the boat repositions to pick you up. Confident swimming helps a great deal, and a flotation aid helps more. Tell your guide your comfort level before you get in the water.
No. They are wild animals that follow the plankton, so a given day might produce several circling below you or none at all. Going with an operator who tracks recent sightings improves your chances, but nobody can promise them.
Keep a respectful distance, stay at the surface rather than diving down at them, and never touch or chase. Staying flat and still is both the responsible approach and the one that produces the longest encounters, because mantas will often approach people who are not chasing them.
