The forested island that shelters the strait and hosts most of the dive resorts.
Lembeh Island is the long, hilly island that runs parallel to the North Sulawesi mainland and creates the strait itself. It is around 25 kilometres end to end, hilly enough that walking its length takes most of a day, and by blocking open ocean swell it is the reason the muck diving in the channel is so calm and so consistent.
The first practical thing to know is that the island versus mainland choice matters less than resort marketing implies. Dive resorts line both shores, the sites are on both sides of a narrow channel, and operators themselves say the difference to your diving is small. Mainland resorts near Bitung save you a boat transfer. Island resorts add five to fifteen minutes on the water and tend to be smaller, because there is less flat land to build on. Pick on the resort, the house reef and the guides, not on which side of the water it sits.
The second is that this is a diving base rather than a beach holiday. The shoreline is mangrove and dark volcanic sand, not swimming beaches, and days revolve entirely around dives. Between them there is the jetty, the heat, and the odd village visit. If you want to go ashore properly, some operators run a full day island excursion, and there is a mangrove boardwalk of around 264 metres at Pintu Kota Kecil, a village that made Indonesia's top 500 tourism villages list in 2024. You will also see a Trikora monument with an Indonesian Air Force DC-3 on a coastal hill, which is often described online as a Second World War site and is not.

如何到达
Fly into Manado (MDC), then drive to Bitung and cross the strait by boat, normally a transfer arranged by your resort. The drive is where most published information is out of date. The Manado to Bitung toll road was completed and inaugurated in February 2022 and cut the journey from the old 90 minutes or so to roughly 40 minutes, yet many dive operator pages still quote the pre toll figure. Allow around 45 minutes to an hour door to door, since not every resort sits at the toll exit. From Bitung the resort boat takes five to fifteen minutes across. There is also public transport: a ferry began serving the Pateten jetty to Papusungan route on Lembeh Island in September 2025, running through the middle of the day, alongside the local motorboat taxis that run until late evening for a few thousand rupiah a head as of 2025. A Bitung to Lembeh bridge has been talked about for years but was still at planning stage in 2025.
最佳时节
Lembeh dives all year, and its own resorts say plainly that the critters are not seasonal. What changes is the sea state. Roughly January to June brings more rain but much less wind and flatter water, which underwater photographers tend to prefer. July to December is drier topside but windier, with more surface chop. Water sits at around 26 to 29 degrees, with operators disagreeing on exactly which months are coolest, so a 3mm suit is the sensible default and a 5mm if you feel the cold.
实用贴士
Treat Lembeh as a diving base and set your expectations accordingly. There are no swimming beaches, evenings are humid and buggy, and repellent and light long sleeves earn their place in the bag. Book a resort with its own jetty and house reef so you are not committed to a boat for every dive. One claim to be careful with: Japanese Second World War cannons and bunkers on Lembeh Island are repeated all over the internet, but no source could be verified for them, and the operator that runs the island tour does not mention them. The one confirmed Japanese wartime trace in the strait is the freshwater jetty that gives the Aer Prang dive site its name. Ask your resort before planning a walk around it.
No. The shores are mangrove and dark volcanic sand rather than swimming beaches, and the appeal is entirely the diving in the strait. Come for the water and treat the island as a comfortable base between dives.
It makes less difference than the marketing suggests. The dive sites sit on both sides of a narrow channel and operators say the diving is much the same either way. Mainland resorts skip the boat transfer, island resorts add five to fifteen minutes on the water and tend to be smaller.
Roughly 40 minutes to an hour now, not the 90 minutes to two hours many dive sites still quote. The Manado to Bitung toll road was completed in February 2022 and cut the journey substantially, though not every resort sits right at the toll exit.
Yes. A public ferry began serving the Pateten to Papusungan route in September 2025, running through the middle of the day, and local motorboat taxis cross until late evening for a few thousand rupiah per person as of 2025. Most divers still come on a resort package for convenience.
Some. Operators run a full day island excursion taking in villages, forest and mangrove, and there is a boardwalk of around 264 metres at the Pintu Kota Kecil mangrove ecotourism area. A Trikora monument with an Air Force DC-3 sits on a coastal hill, though it commemorates later events rather than the Second World War.
