Madakaripura is a 200 metre fall at the head of a narrow, mossy canyon on the lower slopes below the Bromo massif, and it is the tallest waterfall in Java. The approach is the point. From the car park it is roughly a kilometre and 30 to 40 minutes up a river gorge, crossing the water repeatedly, and the final stretch takes you directly under a curtain pouring off the rim, so you arrive at the main chamber already soaked. Inside, the cliffs close into a near circle with the tall main fall thundering at the back. The site carries a strong association with Gajah Mada, the 14th century Majapahit general said to have meditated here.
The honest headline is that this place is often shut. A flash flood closed it in January 2025 and reopening dragged on long enough that local reporting in February 2025 was complaining about foreign visitors walking past the closure signs. Then on 28 March 2026 the bridge at Negororejo village collapsed in heavy rain, injuring two people and severing vehicle access altogether. A 20 metre emergency Bailey bridge was completed and tested in early May 2026, restoring access, but it is temporary infrastructure and the permanent replacement is not expected to be built until 2027 at the earliest.
It also closes during and after heavy rain, for good reason. The gorge is exactly the shape that channels a flash flood. Treat this as a place to check the status of on the day, through your driver or guesthouse, rather than one to build a fixed itinerary around, and be prepared to swap it for something else.

Carry more cash than the lowest figure you have seen quoted.
