Goa Pindul is a water-filled cave near Wonosari where the activity is cave tubing: you sit in an inner tube, a guide clips the group together and tows you through roughly three hundred metres of underground river in near-darkness. It takes forty-five minutes to an hour. There are stalactites overhead, bats in the roof, and one wide chamber where a collapsed section of ceiling drops a shaft of daylight onto the water, which is the moment everyone photographs.
The current is slow, you wear a life jacket and a helmet, and there is no real difficulty at any point. That makes it a good fit for families and non-swimmers, and it is enjoyable in a low-key way.
It is also thoroughly commercialised. Pindul was a quiet local river until cave tubing was set up here, and the entrance is now a row of competing operator offices selling near-identical packages, with tubes released in batches through the day. At busy times groups bunch up inside and part of the float is spent looking at the back of somebody else's helmet. A weekday morning and a Sunday afternoon are two different experiences.
Set your expectations accordingly. This is a pleasant, cheap, three-quarter-hour river float, not an adventure, and it is often sold in the same breath as Jomblang as though the two are comparable. They are not. If you have one Gunungkidul day, Jomblang is the one you will remember; Pindul is what you add on afterwards, ideally with the Oyo River tubing run that most operators offer as an extension and which several people enjoy more than the cave.

Goa Pindul is about 1.5 to 2 hours by road east of Yogyakarta, near Wonosari in Gunungkidul. Most visitors come by hired car with driver or on a tour, frequently combined with other Gunungkidul caves or the south-coast beaches, which are another 45 minutes on. You buy a tubing package on arrival from one of the operator offices clustered at the entrance; they include the tube, life jacket, helmet and a guide. There is little to choose between them on price, so pick one that is not currently loading three minibuses. Cash is easiest.

The dry season, April to October, keeps the water clearer and the river calm; heavy rain raises the level and trips are occasionally suspended for safety. Go early in the day, ideally on a weekday, to get ahead of the Indonesian tour groups that fill the place from mid-morning. The cave is dark throughout, so the weather matters for the river level and the crowds rather than for the light, except in the one open chamber.
