The closest beach to Kuta town, with reef surf breaks and the Bau Nyale festival.
Seger is the beach immediately east of Kuta town, close enough to walk to, and for one or two nights a year it becomes the most important stretch of sand in Lombok. Bau Nyale is the Sasak festival built around the legend of Princess Mandalika, who, pressed by rival suitors she could not choose between without starting a war, threw herself into the sea rather than belong to any one of them. The sea worms that swarm off this coast each year are held to be what she became.
The worms are real and the timing is not folklore. Several species of polychaete worm spawn en masse on the same nights. The rear section of each worm, packed with eggs or sperm, detaches and swims to the surface to release them, and it is that mass of detached segments that people scoop up in hand nets. Elders fix the date each year at a council called Sangkep Warige, following the Sasak lunar calendar, around the nineteenth or twentieth day of the tenth month, which puts it in February or March. The 2025 peak fell on 18 and 19 February. Crowds gather in the afternoon, camp through the evening, and go into the water after midnight until sunrise. Bau Nyale is recognised as Indonesian intangible cultural heritage, and in recent years the event has been spread across several beaches with Seger as the main site, partly because the racing calendar at the nearby Mandalika circuit can clash with it.
On any other day Seger is simply the handiest beach to Kuta town: soft sand, a grassy headland worth the short walk up, and reef offshore that experienced surfers paddle out to. It is not a beginner's wave and the shore is rockier at the edges than it looks.

Seger is roughly a 5 to 10 minute scooter ride east of central Kuta, and genuinely walkable along the coast if you do not mind the heat. A track leads to a parking area behind the beach where a small cash fee is collected locally. If you are coming for Bau Nyale, plan differently. The roads in from Kuta and Praya carry heavy traffic on festival nights, parking fills long before midnight, and it is worth arriving in the afternoon with the crowd rather than trying to drive in late.

The dry season, roughly May to September, gives the calmest water and cleanest surf, and mornings are quietest at any time of year. If you want the festival, you need February or March, and you need to check the date rather than assume it, because it is set annually by the Sangkep Warige council on the Sasak lunar calendar and it moves. In 2025 the peak fell on 18 and 19 February. Sunrise from the headland is one of the quieter pleasures of being based in Kuta town.

The surf off Seger breaks over reef and suits confident surfers. If you are learning, go to Selong Belanak instead, where the bottom is sand. Bring cash for parking, footwear with grip for the rockier edges of the bay, and sun cover, because the headland has no shade. For Bau Nyale specifically, expect very large crowds, an all-night schedule and limited facilities, and be aware the festival is now split across several beaches in some years, so confirm which site is hosting the main night before you commit to it.
