A fishy Bunaken wall known for big schools and resident napoleon wrasse.
Mandolin has the same profile as every other Bunaken site, a coral shelf that breaks into a steep drop, but it holds more fish than its neighbours and that is why guides put it on the schedule. Where Lekuan is about the wall itself, Mandolin is about what is swimming in front of it.
The resident schools are the draw. Midnight snapper hang in tight silver formations off the edge, fusiliers and surgeonfish move through in clouds, and big napoleon wrasse patrol the shallows with the unhurried arrogance of a fish that nothing eats. Turtles come through as they do everywhere in the park, and batfish are common on the drop-off.
The wall carries the usual Bunaken furniture, barrel sponges, sea fans and black coral, but it is worth spending less of the dive staring at it here and more time looking out into the blue, which is where the action is.
The best part is often the end. The shallow reef top at five to eight metres is bright, dense with small reef fish and anthias, and makes a genuinely interesting safety stop rather than five minutes of counting down. Divers who ascend early and drift the flat on the last of their gas usually get more out of Mandolin than those who spend the whole dive deep. It is a relaxed site by Bunaken standards, and in calm conditions a good one for divers still building confidence on walls.

Mandolin is on Bunaken island and reached by dive boat from Manado in roughly 45 minutes to an hour, or a few minutes from resorts on Bunaken and Siladen. Operators normally run it as part of a two or three tank day alongside Lekuan and the other island walls, so you do not choose it individually so much as get it in the rotation. The Bunaken National Park entrance fee is charged separately from diving for everyone entering the water. Your dive centre will usually arrange it; ask whether the price you were quoted includes it. Manado's Sam Ratulangi airport (MDC) is around an hour from the harbour, traffic depending.

Conditions are good for most of the year, with the drier months of roughly April to November giving the calmest crossings and the clearest water. A sunny morning near slack tide is the ideal combination here, because the light reaches the shallow reef top and the schools tend to sit up shallow rather than hanging deep off the wall. Visibility can drop for a day or two after heavy rain in the wet season, when runoff and drifting debris reach the park.

Do not spend the whole dive on the wall. The schooling fish are out in the blue and the densest life is on the shallow flat at the end, so plan your gas to leave fifteen minutes for the top of the reef. Let the napoleon wrasse come to you. They will approach a still diver and will keep their distance from one swimming at them with a camera. Keep good buoyancy off the wall, and if you are newer to drift diving, say so at the briefing so the guide can pick the entry point and keep the group tight.

In calm conditions, yes. It is still a wall with some drift, so reasonable buoyancy helps, but it is one of the more relaxed sites in the park and guides will pitch the dive to the group. Say at the briefing if you are new to walls.
You can snorkel the shallow reef top, which is colourful and full of small fish, and it is genuinely good. The schooling snapper and the napoleon wrasse sit deeper along the drop, so the site's reputation really belongs to scuba.

It is a wall that continues well past recreational limits, so your depth is a choice rather than a feature of the site. Most guided dives work the top thirty metres and finish on the shallow reef flat, and there is no reason to go deeper here.
