The classic Bromo sunrise viewpoint, looking down on the volcanoes from the crater rim.
Penanjakan 1 stands at roughly 2,770 metres on the north western rim of the Tengger caldera, and it is where nearly every photograph of Bromo you have ever seen was taken. From the platform you look down across the grey sea of sand to the smoking cone of Bromo, the near perfect pyramid of Batok beside it, and the bulk of Semeru puffing on the horizon behind.
Three viewpoints share this ridge and they are not interchangeable. Penanjakan 1 is the highest and the most crowded. Bukit Kingkong, also called Bukit Kedaluh, sits a little lower at around 2,600 metres. Seruni Point, marketed as Penanjakan 2, is around 2,400 metres and adds a climb of roughly 250 steps from the drop off, plus a glass bridge that runs in timed sessions with a capped number of people. Which one you get is decided by the package you paid for rather than by luck. Operator price lists for 2026 tier their jeep packages by viewpoint, with the Mentigen viewpoint cheapest and Penanjakan 1 the premium option, so a bargain sunrise quote very often is not Penanjakan 1 at all. Ask which viewpoint is named on the booking before you hand over money.
Private cars are not permitted up the Penanjakan road, so a tourist jeep is the only way to the top. The crowding is not exaggerated. Over the Lebaran peak the park recorded 14,886 visitors across 21 to 23 March 2026, with 8,242 on 23 March alone, and the jeep queues at the Simpang Dingklik junction, where traffic from the Malang, Pasuruan and Probolinggo gates converges, were bad enough to go viral. In the wet season you can do the whole 3am routine and see nothing but cloud.

Cara ke sana
From the base villages of Cemoro Lawang, Tosari or Sukapura the standard approach is a shared or private 4x4 jeep arranged through your guesthouse the night before, leaving around 3am to 3.30am for the bumpy climb to the rim. Operator listings for 2026 put jeep hire at roughly IDR 550,000 for the cheapest two stop package up to about IDR 750,000 for a five stop package including Penanjakan 1, per jeep rather than per person, with a maximum of six passengers. These are commercial listings, not regulated rates, and they rise in high season. Entry to the national park has to be booked online in advance. The park's only official channel is bookingbromo.bromotenggersemeru.org, staff do not sell tickets for cash at the gate, and vehicles arriving without a valid booking are turned back or diverted. The tariff set in October 2024 and still published in 2026 is IDR 54,000 for Indonesian visitors on a weekday, IDR 79,000 at weekends and on public holidays, a flat IDR 255,000 for foreign visitors, plus IDR 10,000 per vehicle. Ignore the many pages still quoting the old IDR 29,000 rate. Since May 2026 visitors entering from the Probolinggo side have also had to buy a second online ticket issued by the Probolinggo regency tourism office, and passenger numbers must match the ticket count.
Masa terbaik
The dry season, roughly April to October, gives the clearest skies and the best odds of a cloud free sunrise, while the wet season routinely delivers a 3am start and a white wall. Weekdays are far quieter than weekends. One planning detail worth knowing: the park normally caps entry at 2,752 visitors a day and raises it by 1,000 over peak holiday periods, but those extra places are only admitted from 07:00, which is after sunrise. If you are travelling at Christmas, New Year or Lebaran, book early rather than relying on the expanded quota.
Baik untuk diketahui
Dress for genuine cold. It is dark, high and windy before dawn, and the jacket and blanket rental stalls at the top do steady business for a reason. Warm drinks and snacks are sold at the viewpoint. Get out of the jeep quickly to claim a spot at the railing, or ask your driver to take you to Bukit Kingkong instead, which gives a similar angle with fewer elbows. Check the calendar before you book. The park closed completely from 6 to 12 April 2026 for ecosystem recovery after the Lebaran surge, and again from 30 May to 2 June 2026 for the Yadnya Kasada ceremony, reopening in the early hours of 3 June. Short annual closures of this kind are now a pattern rather than a one off.
Typically 3am to 3.30am from Cemoro Lawang, Tosari or Sukapura, arranged through your guesthouse the evening before. The drive up is slow and bumpy, and the aim is to be parked and walking to the railing well before first light.
Yes. Booking through the park's official site is compulsory and staff do not take cash at the gate. Vehicles without a valid booking are turned back. Since May 2026 anyone entering via Probolinggo also needs a second online ticket from the regency tourism office.
Only if your package says so. Operators price their 2026 jeep packages by viewpoint, with Mentigen cheapest, Seruni Point in the middle and Penanjakan 1 the most expensive. A cheap sunrise tour usually means a lower viewpoint, so confirm the name in writing before paying.
Cold enough that renting jackets and blankets at the top is a permanent local business. Bring a warm layer, a hat and gloves, and expect wind on the exposed platform.
Penanjakan 1 is the highest at around 2,770 metres and the busiest. Bukit Kingkong is a little lower at around 2,600 metres. Seruni Point, sold as Penanjakan 2, sits at around 2,400 metres and involves roughly 250 steps up from the drop off, with a glass bridge running in capped sessions.
Yes, and it happened twice in 2026 alone. The park shut completely from 6 to 12 April for ecosystem recovery, and again from 30 May to 2 June for the Yadnya Kasada ceremony. Access can also be restricted when volcanic activity rises, so check current status before you travel.
